Peripheral Interventions

Peripheral Interventions are minimally invasive procedures designed to treat peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition in which arteries outside the heart, particularly in the legs, become narrowed or blocked due to atherosclerosis. PAD can lead to symptoms such as leg pain, cramping, numbness, and in severe cases, critical limb ischemia.

The cornerstone of peripheral interventions is endovascular therapy, which includes angioplasty, stent placement, and atherectomy. During angioplasty, a small balloon is guided to the narrowed artery and inflated to restore blood flow. Stents may be placed to keep the artery open and prevent restenosis. Advanced devices and imaging guidance, such as intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and fluoroscopy, ensure precise navigation and treatment of complex lesions.

Patient evaluation involves non-invasive imaging like duplex ultrasound, CT angiography, or MR angiography to determine the extent and severity of disease. Risk factor management, including smoking cessation, lipid control, diabetes management, and exercise therapy, is essential for long-term outcomes.

Benefits of peripheral interventions include symptom relief, improved mobility, reduced risk of limb loss, and enhanced quality of life. These procedures offer a less invasive alternative to open surgical bypass, with shorter recovery times and lower complication rates.

With ongoing advancements in catheter technology, imaging, and vascular devices, peripheral interventions continue to evolve, providing safe, effective, and durable treatment options for patients with complex peripheral vascular disease.
