Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICD)

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) are life-saving devices that are indicated for patients at high risk for sudden cardiac arrest owing to ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. ICDs are different from pacemakers in that they do not attempt to maintain a slow heart rhythm, but instead rehearse the electrical activity of the heart and can deliver shock or anti-tachycardia pacing immediately if a dangerous arrhythmia is detected, restoring normal rhythm. Most contemporary ICD systems combine the ability to defibrillate and pace, which allows for comprehensive rhythm management in patients with heart failure, cardiomyopathies, or a history of cardiac arrest.

ICD technology continues to advance: devices are smaller, batteries are longer-lasting, MRI compatibility is improving, and remote wireless monitoring permits physicians to monitor device functionality and patient status in real-time and minimize ambulatory volume in a more efficient manner. Leadless and subcutaneous ICDs reduce the complications associated with a lead and the risks associated with surgical procedures. Many clinical studies have demonstrated that ICD therapy is associated with improved survival, decreased sudden death, and improved quality of life in a patient population at high risk. While the programming of the device is always individualized to maximize effective therapy and minimize the number of shocks, attending to too much concern relative to shock delivery to the patient can subsequently interfere with important other metrics from overall treatment courses (e.g., anticoagulation and anticoagulation measures). In the future, combining advanced technology with artificial intelligence, wearables, and predictive analytics, the detection and intervention will be even more precise, providing dynamic, patient-centered cardiac protection. Overall and in summary, ICD are an integral part of care and kind of device of care in contemporary histoire.
