Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac Arrest is a medical emergency where the heart will suddenly cease beating efficiently and stop blood flow to the brain and other essential organs. Cardiac arrest is different from a heart attack, where there is a blockage of blood flow, and is mainly an electrical malfunction of the heart which can lead to unexpected cardiac death if not urgently treated.

Usual causes are ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, heart failure that is severe, acute myocardial infarction, and structural heart abnormalities. Risk factors like coronary artery disease, history of heart attacks, cardiomyopathies, and electrolyte disturbances enhance vulnerability.

Recognition and prompt response are essential for survival. The signs are sudden collapse, loss of consciousness, no pulse, and apnea. Prompt intervention with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation significantly enhances survival rates. Advanced interventions, including medications and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), are administered in hospital or pre-hospital environments.

Prevention and long-term care entail detection of underlying cardiac conditions, optimization of medical therapy, lifestyle changes, and in high-risk individuals, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) can be advised to avoid recurrence.

With advances in emergency response systems, public education, and resuscitation, management of cardiac arrest has become better, significantly enhancing survival rates and quality of life for patients who suffer from this life-threatening cardiac event.
