Heart Transplantation

Heart transplantation is a life-saving surgical intervention for patients with end-stage heart failure or severe cardiac disease that cannot be treated with medications, devices, or other treatments. It entails replacing the failing heart with a normal donor heart, restoring normal cardiac function and greatly enhancing survival and quality of life.

Candidate selection is stringent and involves evaluation of cardiac function, comorbidities, psychosocial condition, and fitness for lifelong immunosuppressive treatment. Patients are assessed by a multidisciplinary team of transplant physicians to maximize outcome.

Surgical technique includes removal of the patient's dysfunctional heart and implantation of the donor heart, with subsequent meticulous reconnection of key vessels. Postoperative management in the intensive care unit consists of hemodynamic monitoring, immunosuppressive therapy to avoid rejection, and control of possible complications like infection, bleeding, or arrhythmias.

Long-term care aims to preserve graft function, avoid rejection, and manage immunosuppression complications. Frequent follow-up with imaging, biopsies, and laboratory tests helps detect rejection or complications early. Lifestyle adjustment, medication compliance, and frequent communication with the transplant team are key to success.

Improve competence of surgical skills, immunosuppressive therapy, and postoperative care have all greatly enhanced the outcome for heart transplant patients. Heart transplantation is still the ultimate therapy for well-chooser patients with end-stage heart failure, with improved survival, better functional capacity, and improved quality of life.""
