Ablation Therapy

Ablation therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that is being used to treat various heart rhythm disorders through ablation of pathological electrical pathways in the heart. It has been shown to be very effective in treating arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia. During the procedure, uniquely designed catheters are inserted into veins or arteries, guided to the heart, and then, electro-thermal energy, cryotherapy, or another form of energy is delivered to the area of tissue that needs to be ablated. This eliminates (ablates) the tissue and restores normal heart rhythms, alleviating palpitations, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Typically, patients are recommended for ablation who do not tolerate medications and/or do not lead a normal lifestyle due to their arrhythmia(s).

Technological advances related to cardiac mapping capabilities in the procedure along with 3D imaging and real-time guidance have helped improve accuracy and success rates of ablation procedures while decreasing the risk of complications like unintended tissue damage or cardiac perforation. Recovery is typically very rapid allowing the patient to engage in most normal activities in a few days, but rhythm will typically be monitored for a period of time to assure continuous rhythm control. Overall reducing dependence on antiarrhythmic medications and stroke risk in patients' with atrial fibrillation, ablation therapy has become a mainstay in modern interventional cardiology, creating durable rhythm control while improving overall quality of life for patients.""
