PCI Imaging

PCI Imaging is an essential component of contemporary percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) in that it gives precise visualization of coronary arteries, lesion morphology, and stent deployment. Sophisticated imaging modalities enable precise and safe intervention, enhancing immediate and long-term outcomes.

Important imaging modalities are intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). IVUS employs sound waves to produce cross-sectional images of the artery to help evaluate plaque burden, vessel dimensions, and stent expansion. OCT, with near-infrared light, obtains even higher-resolution images to identify subtle findings like stent malapposition, tissue coverage, and micro-dissection.

PCI imaging informs decision-making at all stages of the procedure. Prior to intervention, it assists in the assessment of lesion length, severity, and plaque type. During stent placement, imaging facilitates optimal sizing and positioning. After deployment, it confirms successful stent expansion and apposition, minimizing the risk of complications such as restenosis or stent thrombosis.

Advantages of PCI imaging are enhanced procedural accuracy, fewer adverse events, and better long-term patency rates. It is especially useful in complex lesions, chronic total occlusions, bifurcation lesions, and left main coronary interventions.

Incorporation of advanced imaging in PCI is a major breakthrough in interventional cardiology, marrying accuracy, safety, and patient-focussed care. Through accurate evaluation and optimisation of coronary intervention, PCI imaging supports improved clinical outcomes and enhanced quality of life in patients with coronary artery disease.
